The Humane Society for Greater Nashua is a community animal shelter serving all of southern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. We have a small small staff and hundreds of volunteers who help us care for and raise needed funds for the pets we care for each year. Over 32,700 volunteer hours were logged helping our pets in 2015!

Some of our greatest supporters are kids! They love animals and want to help ours. We’re grateful for their help. While you have to be at least 15 years old to volunteer here caring for our pets, there are plenty of opportunities for younger kids to they can still help HSFN pets.

Here are just a few ideas:

  • Have a birthday party for our pets! Visit our wish list page of our website and ask friends and family to bring items from our list to your party for our pets. Once you have all of the donations collected stop by the shelter to drop them off, visit our pets, and have your photo taken!
  • Organize a pet supply drive in your neighborhood or school.
  • Collect donations of gently used blankets, sheets and towels which we use as bedding for our pets.
  • Ask your class, Boy Scout or Girl Scout Troop get involved and raise money or supplies for our pets. You can even make toys for our animals as a project too! Here are some helpful links:
  • Talk to your local grocery or convenience store and ask if they would save their empty soda flats for you to collect. We use these boxes for litter boxes for our cats, and we need a lot of them, especially during the Spring, Summer and Fall.
  • Volunteer as a family at one of our Tag Day events. We schedule days to collect cash donations outside of Walmart in Amherst and kids always do great at these.
  • Join our HERO Program! Open to elementary age kids, we offer programs during school vacation weeks and the summer to teach kids how to treat and care for pets via crafts, games and education. All participants end with a small service project to help our pets.
  • Come and participate in our “Reading to Rescues” program. Held the second Sunday of every month from 1-3pm at the Humane Society, kids can come and practice their reading to our cats. It helps the kids and socialize our cats at the same time.
Remember, these are just a few ideas and there are many, many more ways to help! Contact Noelle at (603) 889-2275 ext. 35 or via email to get started today.
