IRS Tax Preparation Options

Comment

To help you file and pay your taxes timely, IRS offers several tax preparation and filing options, including:

IRS e-file

IRS e-file is the best way to file an accurate tax return. The tax software that you use to e-file helps avoid mistakes by doing the math for you. IRS e-file can also help with the new health care law tax provisions. Also, e-file, combined with direct deposit, is the fastest way to get a refund. Eight out of 10 taxpayers get their refunds in less than 21 days when using direct deposit. People who e-file, make fewer mistakes, and it costs nothing for those who choose Free File.

Free File

Free File is offered exclusively through IRS.gov at IRS.gov/freefile. If you earned $62,000 or less last year, you can let one of the 13 brand name software products do the hard work for you. Several Free File partners are offering free federal and free state tax returns. If you earned more than $62,000, you are still eligible for Free File Fillable Forms, the electronic version of IRS paper forms.

More information

You can also find other e-file solutions on IRS.gov, or purchase software for your personal computer, to prepare and transmit your return electronically. Security and privacy certificate programs assure that your tax data is safe and secure.

Prefer to use a tax professional? Use our locator service to find an Authorized IRS e-file Provider near you.

If you owe tax, you can file early and pay closer to the April deadline, with several electronic payment options, including Direct Pay and debit or credit cards. Both are available on IRS.gov/payments and the free mobile app, IRS2Go.
